The Name/title field records the name of an object.

Cataloguing tips

Enter the broadest category first, so that all similar objects group together when displayed in a list. Describe the object as specifically as possible. Don’t use a full stop at the end.

You may wish to enter a regional grouping at the start of the name/title. Here’s an example from Central & Western Murihiku Southland Archive:

Record the type of object and its title. For example:

Use this formula: Common name, specimen type. For example:

  • Brown Kiwi, Egg

  • Kowhai, Flower Pressed

  • Quartz, Pebble (Kiripaka)

Photography and multimedia records

Enter the word Photograph followed by a comma and a very short description. For example:

  • Photograph, Townscape of Main Street, Otautau

  • Photograph, Flight Sergeant W.H. Russell

  • Photograph, Portrait of two unknown women
